Empress of Leona
The Empress of Leona is the head of state of Leona City and the Kingdom of Leona. At any given time, the Empressship is held by the current matriarch of the ruling house in Leona. Two houses have held this position: House Corle up until the Sack of Leona, and House Areli ever since. The current empress is Aria Areli.
History
House Corle came to power in -11 LE, when Arminda Corle organised a defensive militia against a barbarian raid. 11 years later, her successor Belpheobe Corle crowned herself as the first empress.
The role of empress changed frequently due to the nature of the pride system, no ruler holding office for much longer than a decade. This was up until the Sack of Leona in 194 LE, which wiped out House Corle, and let power transition to the much smaller House Areli and its then matriarch, Orlenne Areli. Orlenne ruled until 210 LE, when she died and power transitioned to her daughter, Aria Areli, who rules to this day.
Powers
During the Leonid Empire, the Empressship held significant power as leader of the militia and all executive branches of government. This power she shared with The Consulate, whose scripture she was meant to follow as legislature and who served as judicial authority.
Since the Sack of Leona, however, the Empressship's powers have significantly diminished. She retains control of the militia, and holds significant sway and wealth, but for many of her powers she must appeal to the Consulate, and she is thus herself answerable to the Consulate's judicial branch.
